Sketchbook pages 50-53

I've been doodling in my sketchbook!  Hooray!

1.   2.

3.

4.

1. Gesture sketches.  I referenced poses from a book about Bruce Lee called Bruce Lee; The Art of Expressing the Human Body.  The quote reads, "Knowing is not enough, we must apply.  Willing is not enough, we must do."

2. I read an article about Marilyn Manson's love and use of make-up and wanted to use some red and blue paint.

3. A collage; "Shamanism.  Explore. Learn. Discover.", "Impulse.  Mania.  beauty.  liven up.  day-night.  amazing.  choices."

4. An important reminder collage; "Wake-up call: The 'Not Good Enough' Trap.  Some of us are so used to feeling bad about ourselves, it's become normal.  We have to make a change now, to let go of the 'ideals' we've been taught to achieve, and to stop being ruled by fear.  Essentially, we are addicts, addicted to viewing ourselves in a negative way.  Basically, we're crippled by the fear of not being enough in general.  We have learned...to be afraid of being imperfect - and of being human. That's no way to live. It's tiring and uncomfortable and time-consuming.  We need to stop thinking of ourselves as insufficient, as not good enough.  Essentially, we are addicts, addicted to viewing ourselves in a negative way. A wise woman once told me you can't just stop thinking something, because that leaves a void; you have to replace the old thought pattern with a new, healthier one. What if we replaced our negativity with positivity, replaced the hate with love?  I look in the mirror everyday and say, 'I love you; you're beautiful.'  My mind didn't want to break the habit of hating myself. But the more I did it, the more natural it felt...until it eventually felt good.  I'm over feeling bad about myself."  "Be your beautiful you."  "Kick the habit."

Heirlooms

SHOCK was what Harry felt when he read that sentence in Snape’s new letter to him.

Harry Potter, I also have memories from both your parents.

But, how?! Harry wondered, his mouth hanging open.

The letter didn’t say and there wasn’t too much to the letter after the shocking bit, just detailed instructions on how to mix the catalyst to view the memories, which sounded suspiciously like complicated Potions brewing to Harry.

After staring at the letter with the glow of his wand for some indeterminate amount of time, he had finally lit one of the two candle-filled lamps in the sitting room and had continued to sit staring off for another indefinite length of time.

This is mental!  This has to be some cruel joke!  A very elaborate cruel joke, mind you.

Harry’s mind kept coming back to how.  How had Snape set this up?  How had Snape gotten a hold of memories from Harry’s parents, who were dead long before Snape died?  How, how, how?

It just couldn’t be possible...

Story Maps

As I'm gearing up to release Chapter 4 of my Harry Potter fanfic and finding that my plot needed some restructuring, I thought I'd share some of J. K. Rowling's own plot maps.  This first one is allegedly from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:

I am absolutely amazed and humbled.  I mean, look at the level of detail here!  She organizes by chapter number, the date an event takes place, the chapter title, major plot points (we call these "set-pieces" in writing), how the prophecy relates to each bit, and then characters and their interactions and relationships.  This is so cool!  My plotting is not nearly as intensive as this, although for my own personal full-length work, I hope to achieve an outline like this (also outlines are tools - obviously she didn't follow this perfectly {I think I spot some discrepancies} but she did use it to guide her to keep her on track with all her subplots and weaving of relationships and the setting up and resolution of each scene and set-piece, as I hope to do with my own work).

I also just read Rowling's 2012 novel The Casual Vacancy which was very riveting, with extremely rich characters, and a plot that was almost too real, too close to home for my liking but I liked it because of that, too.  I couldn't put it down, I read it in three days after borrowing it from my local library (it's also being adapted into a TV mini series; the first episode just premiered in the UK on the BBC on the 16th of this month!  It comes to the US on April 29th, partnered with HBO).  I was fascinated by the "braiding" in the novel - the characters were intricately woven together and it was amazing to watch the separate strands come together to form something "solid".  I found a handy little chart depicting those interactions:

Complex, yes?  But important for solid writing!

Circling back around to Harry Potter, I also found a good fan-made Black Family Tree:

Also neat, character-relationship wise.

(And, yes, before you ask, I am quite familiar with Tolkien's level of family trees!  No need to go into them here, though!)

All in all, story mapping is obviously very useful in both the pre-work and to explain a work after-the-fact.  I only hope to have this much attention to detail in my own works, both fan-made and from my heart and head!

The Beatles Never Broke Up

I'm a big fan of anything paranormal and supernatural.  I'm also a big fan of The Beatles.  How are these two loves of mine related?  Well, through this website called The Beatles Never Broke Up.

I discovered this site from famous Tumblr blogger sixpenceee, who posts about awesome sciencey and paranormal type stuff (and is also responsible for the recently popular "crave that mineral" meme).  But back to The Beatles Never Broke Up.

This really gave me chills.  The owner of the website claims to have come into possession of a Beatles album from another dimension.  In this dimension, The Beatles, all four of them, are all alive and well and still writing and producing music.  The album featured on the website is called "Everyday Chemistry" and can be downloaded, in its entirety, from the site for your listening enjoyment.  I listened to the whole album and, I gotta say, it is a) really catchy and b) eerie in how much it sounds like The Beatles' harmonies and composition style.  The first song sounds like a mash-up of past Beatles' songs we know and love, as well as some newer Paul McCartney stuff...but the rest of the album seems to be comprised of "original" tunes.

Now, this all could be quite an elaborate hoax...but, frankly, I've had and heard of too many strange experiences to really discount this man's tale.

How did this fellow come into possession of such a thing?

His story can be found on the website itself, but in brief, it goes something like this:

Upon driving home through the desert, a man stops on the side of the road to let his dog out for a bathroom break.  The dog begins chasing a rabbit and as the man runs after it, he falls and hits his head and goes out like a light.  When he comes to, he is in someone's home, which happens to be in the very spot he fell down on, though there was nothing around him for miles and miles.  The home he is in belongs to another man, who claims to be a "parallel dimensions traveller".  This traveller explains to our injured protagonist that there are numerous Earths in parallel dimensions and in his dimension, the government funded a traveling program and have been building a database of "safe" dimensions and worlds to travel to and that, for a pretty penny, one can purchase an inter-dimension traveling machine to explore with, such as he had (his house).  The two guys began comparing and contrasting things about their respective Earths and discovered that they both enjoyed The Beatles, a band which existed in at least these two dimensions.  The traveller had all these Beatles albums on cassette tape (apparently CDs never caught on in his version of Earth) because a girlfriend he had in high-school loved the band and had made the traveller copies of her officially-issued cassette albums for him to enjoy (aww, how sweet).  That is why, in the photos, the alleged album is a) on a cassette tape and b) has hand-written song titles.  Anyway, our protagonist (who had his head injury healed by the traveller) was so enthralled with these other Beatles albums that he asked for his own copies to be made but the traveller said that he was not allowed to take anything from this dimension to his own.  But while the traveller was preoccupied, our protagonist snatched a cassette for himself before being sent on his merry way home, despite the warning.

Isn't that utterly fascinating?!

Personally, I am reminded of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, how the main characters are constantly running through doors into other worlds, timelines, and dimensions.

Short Story Revisited - Winter

I recently joined an online writing critique community called LegendFire and so far I'm having fun and learning lots about my craft.  I've posted two of my short stories already and have revised one - Winter.  I believe the story is now quite improved, though it probably could still use a little more revision (doesn't all art, though, from the eyes of the artist?).  Anyway, here's the revised version!

Rating: G
Genre: Supernatural Flash Fiction
Word Count: 875
Author's Comments: This is an older piece of mine (like 2009 old).  I was inspired by the song "Old Tennessee" by Dan Fogelberg and a piece of art by a friend at the time.  Revised from original - it may still be a tad bit description-heavy, but I feel it reads better.

Winter
I woke this morning to the sound of wind in the trees - winter was coming.  Sitting up, I closed the window from that crisp autumn breeze and chanced a peek outside.  It was nearing the end of October, and the woods already started to look sleepy, confirming what the wind had already told me.  I blew into my cupped hands to warm them briefly before clasping the metal handle and, giving it a good shove, closed the window on the dulling world outside for the last time this year.
Needing a good cup of tea to start my morning, I rose, shivering slightly as I made my way to the kitchen.  Glancing at my boxes of teas lining the wall of the counter, I decided none of them looked appetizing.
Sighing, I turned to the small wooden table littered with sheaves of paper and empty mugs from days bygone.  Many of the dirtied mugs still had strings stained brown and gray hanging limply from their lips.  I grabbed my heavy deerskin coat from the back of the chair, holding it slightly aloft as I struggled with the flannel one underneath it.  Finally managing to free the lighter jacket, I shrugged it on, carefully laying the deerskin one back on the chair, and made my way to the back door.
I walked out into the garden, the rusty metal hinges creaking as I pushed the weathered wooden gate open just enough for me to sidle thorough and make a drowsy beeline to the little patch near the house that I reserved for my herbs.  I bent down, smelling the aroma of the earth from the sweet morning dew.  Most of the herbs were beginning to fade, the dead-brown color creeping up their little stems, infiltrating their leaves. I gingerly sniffed the chamomile, letting it's warmly pungent spice scent soothe my nostrils – it was still fresh.  I grabbed a handful.

As I was dusting the earth from my thick cotton pants, I stopped short while there was a flash of yellow in my peripheral.  I looked up in time to see a gust of wind burst forth from behind the woods. The leaves rolled in a splendid wave of yellow and red and orange then came to land, scattered, about my feet and the garden in a wet, brown mass.
I turned my gaze back to the forest where gray clouds were lumbering onto the sad yellow sky. And there.  Lightning.  Quick as an arrow.  A few moments bated breath, and, there.  The deep growl of the thunder shook a few jittery leaves from the trees.  They fell, fluttering wildly, to the ground.  A wolf stood at the edge of the forest.
What an awe-inspiring specimen!  The wolf was pure white and stood perfectly still, its ears erect and tail completely relaxed.  It was slightly larger than a regular wolf, and it was facing me.  A chill wracked my spine and I shivered, dropping a chamomile plant.  It made a small plop as it hit the mud right as another lightning bolt ripped across the sky.  The wolf and I shared an abyssal glance before the thunder came lumbering through in another tree-shaking guttural moan.
The wolf slowly turned its majestic head to the sky as more leaves fluttered off their branches, flashing orange and red.  And then, the beast began to change.
It rippled from head to tail and its snow-white body began to warp and stretch.  The neck and legs were elongating at an alarming rate and the skin underneath the fur was a pale translucence. Swirls of ethereal teal light swam around under the blindingly white fur.  The wolf began panting slightly, it's pink tongue poking in and out of it's mouth like a gopher tasting the air.
The wolf, at this point, barely resembled any worldly creature.  I continued to stare, awestruck.  It raised it's enormous head higher and opened it's huge crocodile jaws to the stormy October sky.  It whipped it's willowy tail once and, with an ear shattering and Earth rumbling crack of bright blue lightning, it was gone.
I held my breath, and my ground, waiting for the tremors of thunder to pass.  The forest gave one last shudder, and then everything was still.
I wanted to flee back inside – my clothes were damp and my feet were cold, but another low, distant rumble of thunder stopped me.  I looked up into the gray sky, bidden by the deep call. Instinctively, I shaded my eyes with the palm of my free hand as the sky became intensely bright.  I continued to stare as my vision slowly returned in tiny, glistening specks.  I blinked once, slowly, and was kissed by snowflakes.
I opened my eyes to see the dancing white flakes in the air.  They drifted onto the trees and the leaves and the earth, covering it with a sparkling frost.  They touched down silently around me.

The spell was soon broken as my focus shifted to a piercing, distant noise - the kettle was boiling.
I moved back toward the house haltingly, as if awakened from a dream.

But as I crossed the threshold from outside into kitchen, I found myself facing the white, white winter outside.

Craigieburn Wood (Take 1)

I used to play piano.  I haven't touched it in like over 5 years (you see a theme with me here? I need to be more dedicated to my arts!)  So I set up my keyboard the other week and sight read a tune and played something!  So here's me playing a Celtic tune by the name of Craigieburn Wood (warning: it's a bit stilted because, again, I haven't played in years!)  But it felt sooo good!  I'll do another take soon!

Old Sketch of my Partner

I found this old sketch the other day and was rather titillated by it - it's my partner*!  He's playing video games.  He and I have been together for 12 years!  That's longer than most American couples stay married these days!  I love him, he's so cute, I can't get over him.  I guess we're old souls or something, because even after everything we've been through (and there was a rough patch these past few years) our bond is stronger than ever and we still want to be with one another (and we met in Middle School).

His father wants me to do a painting to put up in his office - I ought to get on that!

*I use "partner" as a gender-neutral term - I'm an androgynous, sometimes gender-fluid lady-person and he's also rather andro and effeminate but identifies as a male-person.

Music Inspiration for the Night

My inspiration for the night - Dimmu Borgir's "Raabjørn speiler Draugheimens skodde" ("Raabjørn Reflects the Mist of Draugheimen")

This song makes me feel like I'm in church; I get this "rapture" feeling, like I'm connected to something of such grace (I used to be forced to go to church when I was younger and I had never, ever felt like what I feel when I listen to this song, or when I had my own intense spiritual experience back in 2009).  It must be because it reminds me of Frodo's journey in The Lord of the Rings.

Langt...der borte i mørket
Gjennom tretopper der månelys driver
Langt...der borte i all tåke
Inn gjennom min sjel den sorte angst river

På de mosegrodde steiner de seg viser
Når nattemørket har senket seg over
Ekkoene...fra deres grufulle jamring
Endeløst...du kan høre

I horisonten langt vekk
Skimtes den sigende skådde
Horder av ild rider månelyset i flokk
Ved daggry de samles ved en bortgjemt ådde

Den iskalde snøen
Har kommet
Denne gang
I evig fokk

Far...away in the darkness
Where moonlight glides through treetops
Far...away in all fog
Entering through my soul the black river of anxiety

On the mossy stones they show themselves
When darkness has descended upon
The echoes...of their heinous moaning
Endlessly...you can hear

Far away on the horizon
Is glimpsed a gliding mist
Like hordes of fire-riders the moonlight flocks
At dawn they gather at a secluded promontory

The icy snow
Has come
This time
In eternal drift

Short Story - The Zoo

TitleThe Zoo
Word count: 1,898
Rating: K+ (for mild elements of gore)
Genre: Horror/Suspense Fiction
Background: I had three random images: A cracked egg, a T-Rex, and a ticket-stub.  I made a story out of them.  A small homage to my partner, who used to dream of T-Rex's chasing him when he was little.
Link to the Short Story - The Zoo (you can also read and review this story, as well as others, on my FictionPress )

The Zoo

Today was the day.  Oh yes, it was going to be a day!
Simon was going to see the tigers!

His mother had been planning this trip to the zoo for the past week now, and Simon’s excitement had been building and building and now, on this day, the day, he could hardly contain himself.

Simon leaped from his bed, thinking he’d save his mother some time by dressing himself today.  Then he bounded his way downstairs (making as much noise on the hardwood as possible) to the breakfast table.  He hoisted himself onto a chair, and sat, bouncing up and down.
“When is it going to be time to leave?”
Mom glanced at him from her position near the stove where Simon could smell eggs cooking.  “You in a rush?”
Simon rolled his eyes.  He wanted to say, “Duh!” but he couldn’t say that to his mother.  Instead he said, “I’m just really excited.”

Old Figure Drawings

I've been uploading content onto my deviantART again and I just dumped a bunch of old figure drawings on there.  The nostalgia was hittin' me somethin' good so I've decided to post them here to inspire me to draw EVERY DAY (newsflash: I started a drawing today!  I got my easel out and everything!  omg!).  All of these drawings are from 2007 when I participated in a three-week program at University of Oregon called JumpstART!.  It was one of the best experiences of my art career thus far.

All of these were drawn with a time limit and a live model.

I'm pretty proud of these still, despite them being...OMG SEVEN YEARS OLD!!!  (Holy cow!  Has it been that long, really?!)  I've got to get crackin' on some new pieces!  Thanks for looking!  Cheers!

III
The Prince's Humble Abode

APPARITION always made Harry quite dizzy.  He stood for a moment staring at the cracked cement beneath his feet, getting his bearings back and his faculties functioning normally before he took his surroundings in.  It didn't take too long and soon his eyes were roving over a dilapidated, dingy, near-deserted spread of outdated brick houses with an old factory chimney looming on the hazy grey horizon.  Harry himself happened to be on a street corner near a small, gross-smelling brook, which wended its way on his left and on towards another grouping of slightly nicer houses.

Harry began to recognize the area from the memories he had witnessed of his mother and Snape as children, although the years had made the area itself worse for wear.  The rusted, crooked street sign did, in fact, read "Spinner's End".

Being on the correct street, Harry decided that the only way to go was forward and so forward he went.  He began to wonder, after passing what had to be the seventh-or-so boarded-up house, if anything still lived in these sad little dwellings at all anymore.

Not that he was worried about being seen or anything (he was usually most comfortable in Muggle jeans and t-shirt anyway) but he found the lack of people rather comforting, oddly enough.  At least he felt that no-one was going to bother him about anything he was or wasn't doing here.

Here, he was only here for one thing, a thing of his own choosing again, with no-one to bother him except the memory of a dead man.

A Blurb On Hearing Voices

This is my tear-jerker for the night.

"It is now clear to me that most mental illnesses can be regarded as tools of personal growth, magnifying our most deep rooted beliefs and fears similar to how the ‘common’ ego reflects our insecurities.  In both cases, we are being shown our self-sabotaging perceptions as an opportunity to re-empower ourselves to transcend them.

To everyone who has a mind and thoughts, this video of a woman describing her schizophrenia will re-empower you to observe your own mind with more compassion and understanding and to reclaim the driver’s seat of your life. If she can do it, we all can."

Read the article I quoted above here.

InterVoice --> the organization Eleanor Longden spoke about at the end of the TED Talk, is for anyone wanting to learn more about hearing voices, or even to find some peace of mind and support.  I know I did.

The following are two articles from InterVoice's website that particularly moved me:

Iceland and Elves

Did you know that Iceland strongly believes in the existence of elves?  Well, they sure do!  (I suppose belief is a strong word, more like a good portion of the populace does not deny the possibility of their existence - see this article on Elves in Cultural Vocabulary.)

This graphic shows the varying levels of believers in England, Scandinavia, and Iceland.  I believe the percentages are based off one of the studies referenced in both the articles above (though I am aware that this graphic may not pertain to anything real at all, it's just very interesting).  But look at Iceland in the top left corner - blacked out with belief!

huldufólk, or "the hidden folk", have been part of Iceland's folklore for centuries.  If the Icelandic Elf School, Álfaskólinn, is to be believed, there are 13 different kinds of elves.  They'll also tell you about the 3 types of fairies, 2 types of troll, and 4 types of gnome, plus 4 hidden peoples (including the Blue People) and other magical beings, though the focus is on elves.  álfar is the word used for “elves” while huldufólk is used for “hidden people”.  The word álfr is common in Old Norse, and it may still be regarded as a common word in Icelandic, though huldufólk is now more common in spoken language and reserved for the hidden folk as “huldufólk are not your average elves, they will hunt you down and destroy your life if you mess with them,” says a native Icelander over at this post about Icelandic elves over at Reddit TIL.  This individual also states that in Iceland they have a “special division that manages elf related things” (I’m not sure if this is Álfaskólinn or if there is another organization).  It reminds me of the government in the movie Troll Hunter (which is awesome and a must-see if you’re a fan of mythical creatures and documentaries).

To make a distinction between hidden ones and elves: "‘There is a place called Álfheimr*; there live the people called light elves, while the dark elves live down in the ground; they are unlike in appearance and much more unlike in nature.  The light elves are fairer than the sun to see, and the dark elves blacker than pitch.’  Without making too much of this distinction, since Snorri” (who is quoted) “could be thinking of good and bad angels**” (what with the infiltration of Christianity), “it is worth our while to take note that the dark elves live in the ground, and correspond to that extent to the elves in Kormáks saga—and, doubtless, to the folk legends current in Iceland at that time.  But elves occupy a more honourable place in many mythological stories and poems.  Over and over again they are mentioned in the same breath as the Æsir themselves: Hvat er me› ásum, hvat er me› álfum? ‘What is the matter with the Æsir; what is the matter with the elves?’  Freyr’s home is Álfheimr, and Alvíssmál lists words from the language of elves, all of which relate to brightness and beauty." - “The Folk Stories of Iceland” by Einar Ólafur Sveinsson
*Álfheimr - translates to “elf home” while Ljósálfheimr translates to “light-elf home”; so Ljósálfheimr is the home of the elves made of light while other elves get to live in Álfheimr
**though Snorri could be (and probably is, in my personal opinion) talking about trolls here.  Iceland considers trolls and gnomes to be a type of huldufólk.  It is of interest to note that the Germans have just as many separate kinds of trolls (and trolls and gnomes are very different in German folklore) as Iceland does elves (perhaps I’ll do a post on that, too).

In general, elves are normally neither friendly nor hostile to men, they repay kindnesses generously but are extremely vengeful.  Their love is therefore very dangerous; if it is returned, cohabitation begins between two incompatible beings; if it is rejected or broken off one can expect a terrifying vengeance. This is all human and comprehensible except that the vengefulness is so much more intense than that of normal humanity (like, think Lovecraftian type of horrifying vengeance).  Coincidentally, female elves spurned and shunned by human love interests can die/fade of a broken heart/grief (much like Tolkien’s elves - spoiler alert, he actually referenced heavily from Scandinavian folklore).  Thus elves can seem to fall into two classes, the one class being evil to men (huldufólk), the others being ljúflingar,  or “the dear people”.  Since we were kind of focusing on huldufólk here, there are also the huldran which are kind of like Uruk-hai, kind of like Dark Elves because they are creepy and have this hole in their backs (some sources say it looks like rotting wood, other a gory wound) that they try to hide and if anyone happens to see this hole in the huldran’s back, the huldran will kill that person who found them out (some huldran are said to have tails as well).

The hidden folk are thought to steal children (having some fascination with human babies) and are associated with the belief in changelings.  Yes, just like in the film Labyrinth.  The root cause of children’s penchant for invisible playmates/imaginary friends is also often traced back to huldufólk.  The hidden folk are also said to have natural powers (different from witchcraft, which is apparently a learned skill, not a natural one, as in the case of elves), often in the form of diseases an illness to mankind, opening portals in rock walls to the realm of the fae, disguising their homes as rocks or trees, making themselves invisible, and other such things.  It is said their powers stem from their spiritual nature, that they even are nature spirits.  Some weird ideas of elves from days bygone include; elves do not have a partition between their nostrils, they have no immortal soul, and they prefer Trójumannasaga (the story of Troy) to the Bible.

Common in folklore and even personal accounts, the elves could be seen dancing over meadows, particularly at night and on misty mornings. They left a circle where they had danced, which were called älvdanser “elf dances” or älvringar “elf circles”, and to step in one would cause illness (or to get really specific, to urinate in one was thought to cause venereal disease).  Elf circles are identified by fairy rings, a naturally-occurring ring of small mushrooms.  But there is also another kind of elf circle, as described by this account given in 1926, found in Anne Marie Hellström’s book, En Krönika om Åsbro (A Chronicle of Åsbro) :
On lake shores, where the forest met the lake, you could find elf circles. They were round places where the grass had been flattened like a floor. Elves had danced there. By Lake Tisaren, I have seen one of those. It could be dangerous and one could become ill if one had trodden over such a place or if one destroyed anything there.
If a human watched the dance of the elves, he would discover that even though only a few hours seemed to have passed, many years had passed in the real world, a remote parallel to the Irish sídhe.

Nils Blommér: Ängsälvor (Feen auf der Wiese - Meadow Elves), 1850

This concept inspired the title of this blog and it permeates throughout my life.
I also strongly believe in the existence of both faeries and elves, not just because of some fanciful, romantic notion but mainly because of personal experience.  As a kid, I often saw fae creatures (especially on hikes and playing in forests with my younger sister but also throughout my adolescence I saw plenty of “shadow fae”) and they would come to me in dreams, just like in the folk tales.  One day, I shall go to Iceland and take an excursion with the Elf School, until then, I’ll be content with my personal experiences as well as these accounts that make it into international, published news:

Elves in real-life news:
May 27, 2012 - politician repays life-saving elves by moving their huge rock home to his garden
January 1, 2014 - elves delay another construction project

And to cover all bases, here’s an essay about the exaggeration of the meddling of elves in road construction from the ICERA (Icelandic Road Administration) in 2008, stating the subject of elves is personal in nature but usually good PR.  Looks like the recipient of the essay and poster on the thread is not wholly swayed by this explanation, however ;)

And, neither am I.
